Book of the Week: “Kings and presidents: Saudi Arabia and the United States since FDR” by Bruce Riedel

An insider’s account of the often-fraught U.S.-Saudi relationship.

Saudi Arabia and the United States have been partners since 1943, when President Roosevelt met with two future Saudi monarchs. Subsequent U.S. presidents have had direct relationships with those kings and their successors– setting the tone for a special partnership between an absolute monarchy with a unique Islamic identity and the world’s most powerful democracy. Although based in large part on economic interests, the U.S.-Saudi relationship has rarely been smooth.

Film of the Week: “Foxtrot” by Samuel Maoz

After his son’s death, Michael spirals into a whirlwind of anger only to experience one of life’s unfathomable twists which rival the surreal military experiences of his son.

“Michael and Dafna Feldmann, an affluent Tel Aviv couple, learn that their son, Jonathan, a soldier, has died in the line of duty. The Israeli military authorities refuse to inform the distraught parents where and how Jonathan died, or if his body had been recovered. Several hours later, they are notified almost matter-of-factly that there has been a mix-up, and that it was some other Jonathan Feldman who has been killed. An angry Michael demands that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) allow Jonathan to return home.”
